Workshop blog - Recitation

Hi, I'm Dina. My role is to train the women to use their bodies, voices and work together as a team.  I'll be cataloguing the trials and tribulations of the workshops as we prepare to lead them out on to the stage for the first time in their lives.  We have 8 weeks.  This is my blog - hope you enjoy reading....and check back for regular updates.

Syrian poet Nizar Qabanni's work makes it into the room and worries of being illiterate stir amongst some of the women.

I am amazed by how quickly the women are advancing. The team who worked in Jordan tell me it took weeks to get to where we are with them today.

It's Day 5. I bring out the bamboo sticks for the first time and admire Ahlam's football skills.

The women have mixed reactions to a film they see, I receive a big compliment, and how a voice exercise can remind you of war planes.

The day before we begin, I go to Shatila refugee camp with producers Itab and Hal to meet the women who will be taking part in the project.

Scouting for Actors

Scouting for Actors

This was our first day on the ground in Beirut. We had planned for it to be quite challenging given the intangible nature of the concept; we knew that none of these women will have been to the theatre before and that many would be unable to read and write. And even if they are interested there is the added difficulty of convincing their husbands/fathers/brothers to allow them to do it. So how is it possible that it only takes one visit to the camp and we've got our actors?!
